Kells Musical and Dramatic Society

Kells Musical and Dramatic Society have been going strong for over 40 years. Formed in 1976, they are the mainstay of entertainment in arts and culture in the town. With over 150 members, they work from the VDP theatre in the centre of Kells and pride themselves in helping the community, local groups and school productions with costumes, props, lighting and Personnel etc.

With a vast programme of events, they not only stage an Annual Pantomime, but also participat in and host Musicals, One act and Three act Plays, Showstoppers, Disney Show, Xmas Show, Pageants and every 3 years THE PASSION PLAY AT EASTER. Every year, 'The Entry into Jerusalem' is performed on Palm Sunday at all Masses.

The 150 members comprise of local children, teens and adults, and behind the scenes personnel, such as stage crew, lighting team, prop making team, make up team, stewards, front of house people and show helpers. What is evident as a results of the work, is the arrangement of many talented and wonderful performers within the membership, from gifted artistic actors, comedy actors, singers and dancers.

The Kells Musical and Dramatic society have been a “constant” within Kells, even during the recent recession. A tough time financially for the people, this group helped the town to get through it with determination and dedication, as they continued to stage the annual pantomimes with the same spirit that they drive their organisation, - with pride, purpose and of course lots of craic. The Group love to see new members join, with an open invitation to anyone who has an interest in performing, to come and be part of this great society.  Contact John Grant 0872079557.

Carnaross Drama Group

Thirteen years ago the seeds were sown for Carnaross Drama Group by four women on a mission!!! That mission was to engage the local community in all aspects of amateur drama……their mission succeeded!!!

Thirteen years later Carnaross Drama goes from strength to strength, has over 100 members, young and old and from all walks of life.

It takes the commitment from all of these dedicated volunteers to play their part, however big or small in making each production a success, with many members working away behind the scenes for months before the two weekends of their ‘run’ as actors, stage managers, set designers and producers, committee members, costume designers, P.R. gurus, and booking office staff. Nearer to the production the team swells to include front of house, ticket office, photographer,  M.C., ushers and car park attendants all coming in to their own in welcoming and looking after the audience members so well.

On board from the beginning has been their director Rose O’Neill, a major factor in Carnaross Dramas’ successful runs, she cajoles, encourages and brings out the very best in each of the actors she works with. Rose tries to live by Charlie Chaplin’s motto: ‘Make them laugh, make them cry and make them want more’......she succeeds every year !!! Rose works in tandem with her husband Paul O’Neill, who as Sound and Lighting Designer, works his magic to create special effects, atmosphere and ambiance which all lend to the authenticity of the productions.

As you can see there is far more to a successful production than meets the eye!!

In the true meaning of Community Spirit, the support for Carnaross Drama from the local community is unsurpassable. Not alone in volunteering or by attending the plays, but to name a few examples: other community groups forgo their weekly activities to allow the Drama Group full use of the Community Centre for the duration of the play, transforming it into a Theatre Extraordinaire!!!. Philip and his staff in The Carfares Inn(046 924 5906), which is located beside the Community Centre, excel themselves in their hospitality by offering an unbeatable four course pre-theatre dinner for the production nights for only €25.00,and of course the many local businesses who so generously sponsor the group.

Carnaross Drama Group has a very proud tradition of anually supporting and donating to charities locally, nationally and Internationally. In 2016 the group all agreed to stage an extra performance of the incredibly popular production of ‘Two into One’ by Ray Cooney. By the generosity of the group and all who attended on that unforgettable night they were able to present Meath Home Hospice Palliative Care a cheque for €5,000……a fantastic achievement for all involved.

Never afraid to challenge themselves Carnaross Drama have produced varied genres of theatre, by playwrights as diverse as Martin McDonagh(The Cripple of Inishmaan), Dale Wasserman(One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest), John.B.Keane(Moll,The Field), Michael Carey( Thy Will Be Done),Frank Carney(The Righteous Are Bold), Bernard Farrell(Say Cheese), and Lennox Robinson(Drama At Inish) to name but a few.

This year Carnaross Drama Group present ‘No Hope Here’ by Vivian Brennan.

A hilarious farce set in Belfast in the early 80’s during a time of ceasefire ‘No Hope Here’ sees streetwise householder Rab Devlin fearing detection and possibly jail as he has been mis-using Housing Executive grant money.

In order to avoid having to pay the money back and going to jail he hatches a plan to claim intimidation.

Unfortunately for Rab, the Loyalists, Republicans and the RUC are all very keen to keep their P.R. in good order ……..and ALL decide to offer him protection. Add into the mix, the Housing Executive eager to help out and Rab’s drinking Buddies, who muster volunteers to also offer protection and you have a potential confrontation of near nuclear proportions when all assemble in Rab’s home and fantasy and reality finally collide !!!

A light-hearted look at Belfast people who know how to laugh at themselves…A MUST SEE !!

‘No Hope Here’ runs February 9th, 10th, 11th – 16th, 17th, 18th in Carnaross Community Centre. Show starts at 8pm nightly. Tickets €12.50. Booking is essential on: 087 055 4158.

Céad Míle Fáilte to all visiting Carnaross  for what promises to be a fantastic evening full of laughs.
